| A Family Album | |
Fremington Quay was an industrialised island within a rural parish. Many men worked in the railway and the cranes, but only a handful of people lived there. Apart from the stationmasters house there was a small row of cottages, home to several Fremington families. The family photographs shown here were generously contributed by Mrs Vera Norman, Mrs Wanda Ruse, Mrs Parsley and others |

| Ilfracombe Lifeboats | |
Ilfracombe has had a lifeboat since 1828 - this was a local pilot boat. In 1850 the first boathouse, with a slipway, was built at the back of the harbour. In 1866 the RNLI established a lifeboat station. In 1871 The slipway was filled in and the lifeboat had to be taken through the town to the top of the harbour to use the slipway there to get to the sea. In 1893 a new larger boathouse was built. In 1991 An inshore lifeboat station was established and in 1996 a new boathouse, with improved crew facilities, was built for both lifeboats and launching tractor. |

| The Great Holsworthy Tree | |
Under the village tree in Anglo-Saxon times the lord or earl used to dispense justice & traditionally the Court Leet used to meet there on the evening before Fair Day. The tree is engraved upon a bill dated 1808 drawn by the Holsworthy & West Devon Bank. Old Photographs show the tree in its last stages & it appears to have been removed before 1890. In 1992 it was decided to replant a Great Tree. Due to the volume of traffic where the old tree had stood it was planted at the top end of the Square. This was paid for by public subscription, as was the aforementioned brass plaque. |

The Primitive Methodists built their Chapel at South Molton in the late 1880's with seating for 150-200 people. It was not open for long and was sold to Miss Lyddon who converted into an undenominational Mission Hall. By 1914 the chapel had been demolished and a double fronted house built on the site. |

| William Rock, Barnstaple's Greatest Benefactor | |
This is the story of William Frederick Rock, Barnstaples greatest benefactor. From relatively humble beginnings he built a fortune through hard work, and then spent most of it on good causes in his home town and elsewhere. He was not alone in this but the scale of his generosity was unusual enough for him to be held up as an example to others even in the City of London. This presentation has been compiled by Robin Davey. To browse all our pictures of Rock, select Collections on the navigation menu bar above and then the Rock Collection. |

| WINKLEIGH Street Names of the Past | |
Winkleigh is unusual in that its street names were regularly changed, so the location of the streets recorded in the census listings is not always obvious. The House Scouts Project has been able to identify the location and extent of the streets named in the census listings by locating many of the houses in the census returns. Click on the map to start your journey visiting those streets and seeing the name changes and learning the significance of the names. |
