Alfred John Kupke
Alfred Kupke was born in West Ham, London in 1889. His father was a confectioner. Alfred married Winifred Venner from South Molton in 1937 and they ran Kupke's bakery in Caen Street. Kupke's were known to have the best cream cakes during the years of the second world war.

Caen Street
Although Caen Street is now one of the main streets in the village at one time Church Street was the main thoroughfare. Caen Street used to be mainly cottages until the 1890's when many were demolished and new shops built. The thatched farm house shown in the photograph was one of the last buildings in Caen Street to be demolished and replaced with shops. Slees ironmongers now have a shop on the site.

Caen Street
An early photo of Caen Street shops. On the left the garden of the thatched farm house can be seen and children are gathered beside the Red Lion on the right. Further down the street on the left can be seen the shops with accomodation above. The first one was John Brook's grocers. Several properties had been demolished in 1892 and Mr W Slee had build " a commodious shop for Mr Brooks. He was a short, thick-set man with powerful glasses, bald with a huge, pure white apron around his chest. In later years Nellie and Winnie Chichester ran a haberdashers shop here.

Caen Street
Caen Street decorated for the 1935 Jubilee celebrations. The North Devon Journal reported: "The Silver Jubilee at Braunton was well and truly observed. The most striking feature of the celebrations was the spontaneous way in which all classes of the community took part in them. Decorated streets, pealing bells, a service of thanksgiving, marching children led by the silver band, children's sports, adult sports, children's tea, a tea for the unemployed and for parishioners over 65 years of age, a dance, a great beacon, fire works and magnificent weather all combined to make a memorable day in the annals of Braunton. The streets of Braunton are a gay sight. Strings of flags cross all the principal thoroughfares. National flags, coloured pennants, and shipâ??s signal flags make a festive riot of undulating colour. The decorations subcommittee of the Jubilee Committee under the direction of Capt. W.B. Incledon-Webber, J.P., the Chairman, concentrated their attentions on Cross Tree, Caen Street and the immediate vicinity. Sailors, carpenters, and electric light wire men all lent a hand in the erection. Householders everywhere augmented the committees efforts, and flags and bunting hung from innumerable windows. At the Parish Hall, Nelsonâ??s famous signal flies from the gable end."
